Ponce Resist Polychrome is a rare resist ware found in the LQ-MVAP assemblage. Having been decorated using the resist technique described above and upon removing the protective coating, a thin red slip or wash was applied to the entirety of the vessel surface. The vessel was then refired at temperatures below 500-600 degrees centigrade. Due to the red slip or wash, it is difficult to determine the light background color of Ponce vessels, but it is reasonable to assume the original background color is the same as the paste. The red slip, in places where it covers only the light background, is usually dark red (2.5YR 3/6). Since the carbon-based colorant is also coated with red slip, it reads as very dusky red (2.5YR 2.5/2) but its orig...

Description

The plate is perhaps the most common vessel form of Ponce Resist. One specimen is rather small with a diameter of only ca. 7 cm and a height of only ca. 2.2 cm. The only other vessel form observed is the olla, but small sherd size makes the detailed description of olla size and form difficult. One specimen appears to be from a relatively small olla with a short neck and flaring rim, that might have been held with a single hand. The other ollas are somewhat larger, but there are no rims tha...
