General Information

Cliff Black-on-red is a type of Roosevelt Red Ware found in the Upper Gila subregion. The type dates to 1360–1450 CE and is associated with the Pueblo IV and Protohistoric periods. Vessel forms include recurved bowls that are slipped red on the exterior, and have two black-on-red design fields, one at the rim and one below, separated by a banding line on the interior (Lyons and Clark 2012:20).

Some consider Cliff Black-on-red as a variant of Cliff Polychrome, but without the white design fields (American Southwest Virtual Museum 2023)
